How we ranked the cities:

From a list of metro-areas across the US, we compared each metric we looked at to the average to see how far each city deviated and combined those final metrics to get a total score. For population-reliant metrics like the number of dog parks, restaurants, trails, and walkers, we used the number per 1 million residents. Please note, this was not a complete list of every city in the US. We combined a list of the top 50 cities in the US by population with our service area to find sizable cities we’re familiar with. We removed/combined cities that were within proximity to each other to reduce redundancy (i.e. if NYC makes the list, it may be redundant to include Yonkers).

Dog Parks, Dog Friendly Restaurants, Dog Friendly Trails per Capita

Not only did we look at how many dog friendly places you could bring your four legged friend, but we considered how busy and wide-spread those were. NYC has more than 10 times the number of dog parks as El Paso, however they also have 10 times the population, meaning the dog parks will be busier and likely further apart. This would give both cities a similar score per capita. For hiking trails we considered that to be something you may drive further for so we included trails within a general proximity of the area, not just in the city limits.

Accessibility of Dog Walkers

We not only looked at the number of dog walkers per capita, but also the relative cost compared to the average income. Estimating paying a dog walker 5 times per week at the average local rate, Madison, WI came in at the lowest percent of the average local income, while Fresno, CA came in at the highest at nearly twice as much.

Dog Friendly Weather

Every dog and every dog owner are different from the next, so this scale is relative (for example, my Great Pyrenees growing up loved the cold and would refuse to come inside when the local authorities determined it was ‘too cold’ for them, however leaving a different breed outside in that weather would be animal abuse). In order to determine the number of good weather days we eliminated days of precipitation as some may not choose to walk their dog in those conditions. We also considered not only what may be unsafe temperature for the dog, but also if most people would walk in that temperature; therefor we eliminated days above 80 and below 50 degrees Fahrenheit.

The Averages:

The average city from the list we compared had 25.3 Dog Parks (68.4 per million people), 222.6 Dog-Friendly Restaurants (694.8 per million people), 142.5 Dog Walkers (346.9 per million people) costing 5.2% of the average local income for 5 hrs/wk, 47.3 Dog Trails (162.8 per million people), 151.7 Good Weather days, and a total score of 6.
