Each fall, two things are inevitable-
Both of these are pretty sites; however, one of them requires a lot of work. And depending on how many trees you have on your property, leaf build-up could be enormous. And even with a small number of trees, leaf build-up can be pretty significant. Leaves have both their advantages and disadvantages, but one heavily outweighs the other!
Leaving your leaves on your lawn for a significant period of time can be detrimental to your yard. Brown spots, diseases, pests, and much more can appear due to unraked leaves. If fallen leaves are not removed in a timely manner, then the grass can then die and lead to future problems.
Your lawn needs to breathe, and a layer of leaves on top of the grass stops that from happening. Leaves create a barrier that prevents water, nutrients, and airflow from reaching the grassroots. And not to mention, unraked leaves deprive the grass of an essential element- sunlight. Without sunlight, grass cannot grow.
Leaves not only cause issues on the ground, but they can also cause issues one to two stories off the ground. Leaves can accumulate in your gutters and potentially clog both the gutters and downspouts. Gutter clean up should be done at least twice a year to prevent future damage.
So the answer is yes, you do need to rake and clean up the leaves in your yard this fall. Even if the leaf accumulation is light, there is no way of escaping cleaning up your leaves. Or maybe there is this year?
